Misrepresenting the Truth to Defame the Church

In a bid to show me how bad the Church is, an anti-clerical sort over where I been discussing science and religion included a link to an anti-Catholic site. It includes this picture:

The interesting thing is that Joseph Ratzinger is shown in priestly vestments. In fact, without the caption you might think he was doing anything from consecrating the Body and Blood to blessing the congregation. But, no, this website assures us he is saluting Hitler.

There’s only one tiny problem. Ratzinger was ordained in June of 1951.  That is a full six years after the death of Hitler.

I guess there’s no limit to the depth some people will go to villify the Church.

Here is the whole picture. It is more likely that the Ratzinger brothers are about start a sychronised dive than that they are saluting a long-dead German dictator.

  1. Mimi Says:

Huh. He’s clearly performing priestly duties. But, rock on those who would like to slam him. Rolls eyes.

  2. Michael Says:

I took a look at the site to see what it was like. It’s easy to see that they’re chronologically challenged, or else dishonest, as they also make much of Ratzinger being in the Hitler Youth, with complete disregard for the usual time gap between being youth and being ordained as a priest. When I was in college a very fine gentleman taught in the German department, who happened to have been a former Hitler Youth. What choice did a kid have in that place and time? He hid among the rubble during the bombing of Dresden, and years later did joint lectures with a professor colleague of his who had been the bombardier in the lead Allied plane. Anyway, the experience of knowing that professor inoculated me from any temptation to judge someone merely because they had been part of Hitler Youth.

That site seems to be by some very zealous Adventists, which kinda makes me feel bad, because Adventists at their best are a group I respect very much, though I have many disagreements. But the RemnantOfGod.org crew don’t look like they could be easily informed of something new.

  3. Nicholas Says:

So what you’re saying is, no one saluted Hitler AFTER his death? I believe the millions of neo-Nazi skinheads in the world today would beg to differ. Looking at today’s Nazi movements via Rome proves the Vatican is still using the same tactics they did when their pawn Hitler was alive. If it was really “only” Hitler, why is all this still happening? It’s because it wasn’t Hitler, it was Rome just as prophecy predicted.

    God bless

  4. Nicholas Says:

PS.. I am not a Seventh Day Adventist. That church was already infiltrated and taken over by Rome decades ago. Proof? See SDAapostasy.org

  5. sol Says:

No, what I’m saying is that Fr Joseph was holding his hand out in blessing. Anyone who is familiar with the liturgy of the Church can see that. To pretend that there is some credence to the idea that it has anything to do with Hitler is absolute silliness – about as silly as the site from which I took it.

The SDA taken over by Rome? Sorry, I’d visit the site, but I’m already doubled over with side-splitting laughter.

  6. Guess Who Says:

Strange how his “priestly garments” look very “novice”, and also very strange how if he does have BOTH arms up in a blessing.. WHERE’S THE PICTURE TO PROVE IT!?!?!?!

  7. sol Says:

Who said anything about both arms? Why would he use both arms? What priest in the 1940’s, 1950’s, or 2000’s would use both arms? I’d almost think you don’t know the first thing about Catholicism.

  8. David Says:

Google Image “Josef ratzinger”, find the original (it’s page number 4 or 5), add it into your article.

As you’ll see, *both* of hands are raised and he is standing next to his brother. Both men, with both arms raised, are giving a blessing following their ordination.

    End of.

  9. guess who Says:

In Scripture it is instructed that hands raise the Heaven are done PALMS UP. Only in Satanism, Naziism, Romanism, and Paganism do you see PALMS DOWN.

  10. sol Says:

That’s pretty funny. I’ve never seen a blessing given palm up, whether by a Roman, an Orthodox, an Anglican, or even a Presbyterian. Nor, for that matter have I seen anything in Scripture mandating the upward palm only. It would be rather odd to pronounce a blessing upon something or someone using the back of one’s hand.

You haven’t commented here since July. Did it take you that long to come up with this?

  11. cesco Says:

Nice try, but not good enough! if you look closely, you notice that the picture is very conveniantely cut at the left arm… in fact, in the full pic, the left arm is also put up. That, in fact is when the priest blesses the bread and wine before consagrating it.

  12. GuestWho Says:

Reading a Bible is necessary if you’re going to ever see “palms up” in blessings. For starters, see Psalms 28:2 when you get time.

  13. sol Says:

I’ve been reading the Bible since I first began to read. The first time I read the Bible through, I was 12 years old. I’m nearly four times as old now and I’ve continued to read it.

I know Psalm 28, and especially verses 1 and 2, very well. Many years ago, when I was an evangelical Protestant, I wrote a worship song based on these verses that is still sung in churches.

For starters notice that verse 2 has nothing to do with blessing whatsoever. It has to do with supplication. It has to do with asking for a blessing, not delivering one. It also says nothing about the palms – it only says “hands”. The theme of blessing the Lord does not develop until verse 6, which I am sure you have noticed, given your familiarity with the Psalm, says nothing about the positioning of the hands. Sadly what has happened here is that rather than reading the Bible, you have read into the Bible things that aren’t actually there, based on your own presuppositions.

One must also be careful in using the Psalms didactically. David saying he is doing something in the Psalms does not prescriptively indicate that this is the only way a certain thing is done. That would be like suggesting that since he says in Psalm 32:11, “Shout for joy all you upright of heart!” we have to go around shouting all the time and that if we aren’t constantly shouting, we must not be upright of heart.

That being said, there is nothing wrong it lifting hands upward in blessing God. Most people who use their hands in worship either hold them palms up, elbows bent so that the arms are roughly perpendicular to the body, or with the arms extended upwards and the wrists pulled back so that the palms are angled in a somewhat greater than 90 degree angle from the ground. (There’s nothing wrong with shouting either, for that matter.)

What you have not demonstrated is a Scriptural prohibition concerning extending the palm toward a person or thing being blessed. We do, however, have an example of the opposite. When people are ordained or otherwise appointed to ministry hands are extended toward them and the palm even touches them (e.g., Acts 6:6, I Tim 4:14).

You have not been trained in your own anti-Catholicism very well if the best you can do is suggest they are wrong because their ministers extend their hands in blessing, especially since in doing so you have demostrated terrible Protestant biblical interpretation by resorting to ridiculous eisegesis. I’m not inviting you to make another attempt at Rome-bashing here, but if you are going to do this somewhere else at least do a decent job of it.

Oh, and never, ever, presume you are the only one who has read the Bible.

  14. Michael Says:

I’ve always figured that when Paul laid his hands on Timothy (see II Timothy 1:6) that he placed his hands palms down and didn’t put the back of his hands on Timothy. I’ve seen Bible-believing Christians of many types do this many times.

I’ve also seen Catholics praying with their palms up many times, at mass (my wife is Catholic, I’m a protestant), as it seems to be the custom now during mass to pray the “Lord’s Prayer” with palms up (they look almost like a bunch of Pentecostalists at that point) and/or joining hands.

  15. Michael Says:

I should have said “we” look like a bunch of Pentecostalists. I don’t take communion there, but I certainly do join in prayer to God, lifting up holy hands.

  16. sol Says:

Michael, Has your wife converted to Rome from the East?

  17. Michael Says:

Yes, though it wasn’t direct from the East, as she had joined the Lutheran Church with me for awhile. To tell you the truth, I think a part of her was always with Rome all along, even when she was Orthodox.

  18. AnonyMOUSE Says:

Why is the picture on this page unlike the one on RemnantofGod.org’s site?

BTW.. even if you are correct. What about the tens of thousands of other facts RemnantofGod.org shares? Why do people always avoid the massive facts to clamor after a “possible” misnomer?

  19. sol Says:

The picture is copies from the site and has not even been rezised. I just double checked it with the one on the site.

I had a quick perusal through the site again and I didn’t come up with a single fact, other than the fact that it is off-shoot SDA with the principal purpose of anti-Roman propaganda. It full of silliness and error. I’m not a Roman Catholic, but not for any of the “facts” or “evidence” presented there.

  20. Marc Verhoeven Says:

This photo is manipulated: 1 arm cut off.
    Not a nazi-salute.
On the original photo: Ratzinger has his 2 arms upwards!

  21. jakool Says:

you are the most stupid person in the world! are you a catholic? or you are just ignorant? the ratzinger brothers are extending their hands for the final blessing which is actually done before the mass ends.

  22. Michael Says:

That’s what I like about email posts. People express themselves in such gracious, Christlike ways. The comment above includes a dichotomy whose logic reminds me of an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in which a holodeck-generated cowboy says to Worf, the ridge-headed Klingon, “Are you ugly, or did your mother marry an armadillo?”

  23. Michael Says:

Hmmm … I think I meant “blog comments”, not “email posts.” I shouldn’t do this so early in the morning, especially on the LORD’s day.

  24. Meep-not yoop Says:

Amazing how NO ONE was able to give any Scriptures to back up a PALMS DOWN blessing, and the only one that tried gave TONS of twisted opinions. A Jesuit perhaps? Ever read their books and how they take PAGES to explain one verse so as to lie and twist it towards Pagan rituals. But when Jesus taught in the Word He always allowed the Bible to explain the Bible using a verse here and there. Hmmm.. why do Catholics claim to be Christians when 90% of their doctrine is NOT in the Christian Bible, but is in the Pagan manuscripts?

    • JoeMamma Says:

Amen meep! amen! Catholics ARE NOTE Christans. They are the ones Satan uses to make the real Christians look evil to all the world. IE: Muslims hate Christinas because of what CACTHOLICS did to them! Yet, Catholics are not Christians! They are Pagans!

  25. sol Says:

I like that JoeMamma (and your other names Meep-not Yoop, GuestWho and guess who, since you should disguise your identity a bit better if you are going to be your own Amen Corner): Catholics ARE NOTE Christians, though perhaps there should be commas for better readability. Catholic ARE, NOTE, Christians. Or to make it easier still, perhaps the word order could be adjusted: NOTE, Catholics ARE Christians.

And yes, they, Christians, are the one Satan uses to make Christians look evil to all the world. All Christians are used by Satan because they all choose to sin.

After that your comment gets very confusing.

I don’t know which Christinas are hated by Muslims. Are you referring to Christina Aguilera? Christina Ricci? Christina Applegate? I’m unclear on this.

I’m also unsure of what CACTHOLICS did to them (“them” being Muslims or Christinas – it is unclear form your grammar).

The you completely change your mind and say Catholics are not Christians, but Pagans. Now I’m familiar with both Catholic and Pagan beliefs and I’m confused. Catholics say exactly what they believe every Sunday, so I’m check that against Pagan beliefs.

    We believe in one God,
    the Father, the Almighty
    maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen. (Pagan? Nope.)

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
    the only Son of God,
    eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
    true God from true God,
    begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. (Pagan? Nope.)

For us men and for our salvation
    he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. (Pagan? Nope.)

    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
    in accordance with the Scriptures;
    he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end. (Pagan? Nope.)

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of Life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets. (Pagan? Are we seeing a trend here? Nope.)

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen. (Pagan? Surprisingly, nope.)

The silliest thing is calling me a Jesuit because I used the Scriptures! Yet with all your comments using various identities, you mention one Scripture reference from a Psalm as if this is some sort of slam-dunk proof-text.

If you bothered to read this blog, you would know that I am not a Catholic at all. I’m an Orthodox Christian. One need not be a Catholic to identify silly, baseless accusations against individual Catholics or the Catholic Church.

It is interesting how this has shifted from ridiculous accusations that it was a Nazi salute to an attempt to say that a blessing given palm down is pagan, when it has been the universal hand use by first the Jews and then by Christians when giving a blessing.

  26. Frans J.M. Hendriks Says:

Read Babylon Mystery Religion By Ralph Edward Woodrow and The Two Babylons by Alexander Hislop. The Truth shall make you free from deception

  27. sol Says:

Read them years ago, back when I didn’t know better than to be anti-Catholic. They played well to the Protestant paradigm I had at the time. Of course I’m not Roman Catholic now, but I also know that the stuff I imbibed from Woodrow and Hislop was rubbish based upon false presuppositions.

  28. Tim Says:

Lets see 10 of millions of Christians persecuted or burned at the stake for wanting to uphold the truth in scripture. Burned by who ? The Catholic church.

Untold children molested by priest and nuns across the globe.
Who gets protected? The Priests’ and Nuns’, by who? The Catholic Church.

Croatians killed by Jesuits for refusing to become Catholic.

Calvinist in Florida killed by Catholic Church for refusing to become Catholic.

Church becomes involved in politics, by enforcing Sunday Sacredness in many countries in the European union.

Statements by Church suggesting that those who are against Sunday, should be tried as Heretics.

Jews killed at the formation of the Catholic Church for wishing to keep the REAL SABBATH.

Catholic Church cannot stand the free Society of America and is seeking to change that by infiltrating all areas of Government. Ask yourself why we have 6 supreme court justices in a nation of only 21 percent Catholics. Do you consider that fair representation, or is something more sinister in the works.

Since Vatican 2 in the 1960’s almost all churches in America have come under the control of Catholicism. They lured them in first with Celebration ( party atmosphere) music and praise . And now we have Contemplative Prayer, Spiritual formation, Alpha meetings, NLP among other New Age practices in religion all aimed at one thing. To collapse what was once Protestantism. To encourage the world to worship the power behind the church, which is Satan himself.

This is all about CONTROL, FORCE , SATAN’S favorite tools. God is love. God wants you to choose to love him. God wants you to have the facts. Satan hides all facts. Satan wants you to think religion is about having a good time, he doesn’t want you to warn anyone. Just enjoy the party.

Jesus told us he did not come for peace. He came with a sword to divide the Truth from Error. You need to read your King James Bible. You know the Bible the Catholic Church tried to destroy, because it exposed the wrongs of the Church. The very Bible that the Catholic Church would kill you for having in your possession, if they could.. Why do you think the KJV is the one Bible the Catholic Church still hates today? Don’t believe me, check out their own words on the subject.

Ask yourself why the Ten Commandments the Catholics adhere to are not the same ones found in the KJV. The ones written with God’s own finger.

Ask yourself why Catholics now want a one world religion. Ask yourself why the Church is asking if it is okay to call God …”ALLAH”. You can not find that name anywhere in scripture no matter what language. Allah is Satan.

Ask yourself why the Pope bows to a Shiva Princess.

Ask yourself why Catholics promote a mere mortal to the level of God.(Mary)

They say they don’t pray to her but all you have to do is look up pictures of Mary and you will find people praying to her. A dead women.

Ask yourself why Cathedrals have to be erected over the DEAD.

Ask yourself why Mass cannot be conducted unless their is a dead saints relics in the church.

You want to know about the proper place of the dead when it comes to worship? Look in the KJV. It will tell you that God’s house should be no where near a grave.

Look around at world History. Most wars were started by the Catholic Church.

Lastly look at the Popes summer encylical. He wants to be involved with the New World Order.

Don’t think any denomination is safe. Even the SDA’S have been infiltrated. The once arch enemy of the Catholic Church is now involved in business dealings with her, and sends their ministers to her institutes of learning, to learn EASTERN MYSTIC RELIGION.

The remnant are those who keep all of God’s commandments and have the promise of Jesus’s forgiveness. There is no such denomination on the globe that actually practices this. In these last days you are going to have to study and trust in God’s leading. Do not listen to any Pastor or any Church. Open that Bible and pray for guidance and God will give it too you if your heart is wanting the truth.

Lastly, in the Catholic Church’s own words, they say they will never change. Which means if they persecuted before, they will do it again.

  29. sol Says:

That was a very funny rant. If I had the time, I’d respond to each ridiculous statement, Tim. (Is that your real name this time? You’ve used so many.)

How bizarre is your too-SDA-for-the-SDA theology? I think everyone should see. At least you are right that no denomination on the globe believes what you believe. You are the remnant of one.

    Proverbs 18:1-2

    • Tim Says:

Did you like the rant Sol? The reason you could not reply is because you cannot disprove. I can assure you thats my first comment. Why don’t you first investigate the goal of Vatican 2. To unite all churches under Mother Rome.

Then look what happened to the protestant churches in America over the last 100 years, Notice how they all are paying homage to sister Rome, and uniting under her banner.

Elijah ran to the wilderness and pleaded before God. He thought he was the only one. God said there were 7 thousand in a nation of millions that had not bowed the knee to Baal. Notice God did not say His People, the Israelites, as a whole had not bowed, but a remnant within.

That should be a lesson to all that your religion cannot be based on which group you belong to, but rather if you as an individual are following God’s truth. Do not let the church dictate to you what truth is, let God lead you and put your trust solely on Him.

Do not follow the masses. History will show you that the masses get it wrong every time. The masses decided to stay out of the Ark. The masses screamed, crucify Him, crucify Him. The masses thought the World Trade Centers were safe and did not evacuate in time. The Bible says the masses will get it wrong in the end of time and only a remnant will be saved. Those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus.

The first test was about obedience and the last test is about obedience. Jesus covers your sin when you ask forgiveness, that does not give one license to go out and purposely sin once they know the truth. Jesus said that if you love him you will keep His commands. That is how we show our love to God, by honoring his words and trusting him even when it goes against our nature to do so, because THE ALTERNATIVE is DEATH, and God does not want us to die. Satan on the other hand wants to take all down to the grave with him, so he tries to mix truth with error, to confuse us. He says it’s okay to supplant God with Man’s traditions. Hence you have Sunday worship- not biblical, Mary veneration/worship- not biblical, Contemplative Prayer- not biblical, Lent-not biblical, etc……. All the inventions of Papal Rome keeping alive Paganism

      • sol Says:

Tim, the reason I didn’t reply is because it really isn’t worth the time. There’s nothing to disprove. You cannot disprove to the man wearing rose-tinted glasses that the world is not pink unless he is willing to take off the glasses. You operate under a delusional presuppositionalism that serves as the epistemological basis of your “facts”. You intersperse historical hogwash with a sort of bibilical proof-texting that makes sense in your own mind.

In this particular case, the reasons the masses don’t listen to you is simply because you are bonkers.

Ignoring the teaching of the Church in the cause of trusting solely in personal revelation has led to thousands of denominations (and in many cases non-Christian cults) and even more thousands of Lone Ranger Christians (or in some cases, such heresy as to no longer be Christian). Occasionally these are as looney as you, and in rare cases even loonier.

So, yes, if I had the time, I could answer all of your points, but it wouldn’t matter, because you are no longer able to process a thing I would say. I don’t need to answer for the sake of my readers, because they already realise that you are nuts.
