Muscular Christianity

I just saw Dr Evan Harris, MP – key proponent of hybrids, embryo testing, and abortion – on BBC News The Record. He was discussing the upcoming legislation.

“I’m actually relieved that we’re not in the American situation, where I think there’s disproportionate influence in my view of white, extreme right-wing, muscular, evangelical Christianity.”

Dr Harris works better in an environment where the Church isn’t so strong.

So, you read this as “Ha! were he over here, where the church is strong, he’d be defeated!” If God is omnipotent, couldn’t he crush Dr. Harris like a bug?

Dr. Harris is saying, obliquely, “I’m glad we’re not in America, where people are idiots.”

You’re saying, “Dr. Harris isn’t able work well while being thwarted by idiots.”

    “Muscular Christianity” is idiocy.

Given that I’m in the UK, I believe the correct way to express this would be, “Ha! were he over there, where the church is strong, he’d be defeated!”

And yes, God’s omnipotence means that He could crush Dr Harris like a bug. This fact, of course, bears no relationship to the previous statement, as clearly what God can do and what God chooses to do, are not, and there is no reason they should be, the same thing.

Rather as we have been created with free will, God allows us to make decisions and face the consequences of those decisions.

And it is true that there is no doubt that Dr Harris is saying, “I’m glad we’re not in America, where people are idiots.” Of course, being a reasoner – scary or otherwise – you realise that Dr Harris saying Americans are idiots bears no relationship to whether or not Americans are actually idiots. You should therefore see the fallacy of your syllogism and realise that I am not saying, “Dr. Harris isn’t able work well while being thwarted by idiots.” Rather I am saying that Dr Harris isn’t able to work well with people whom he thinks to be idiots.

Thus, perhaps a better nom de plume for you would be “scarygapsinreasoning”.

This is further demonstrated by your final unsupported statement that muscular Christianity is idiocy. That you either don’t believe in Christianity, or disapprove of Christianity that expresses its collective political will, in no way makes it idiocy.

The idiocy so far appears to be yours.
