Banning Healthy Food

Advent is here so it is time for school Christmas fairs. It’s a time for fun, fundraising, and health and safety bans.

Mynydd Cynffig Junior School in Kenfig Hill, Bridgend, has banned pupils from taking home-made cakes and biscuits such as mince pies to its Christmas fair.

The local councillor in charge of education realised the problem with this policy is really greater than the chance someone might bite into a dodgy pie: “Children are going to get a complex that anything that comes out of a packet is better for them or become nervous about what they eat.” With school kids fat and bouncing off the walls, we need to promote healthy eating, even when it comes to pies and cakes.

The headteachers in the Bridgend area are especially nervous because of the E. coli outbreak in 2005 that killed one little boy and made another 157 quite ill. The only thing is that the outbreak came from commercially produced meat supplied under contract to schools. Seems to me, there is a better chance of food safety from homemade items.
